Hi! My name is Andrew Tatum and I'm a chaplain and musician based in Raleigh, NC. I currently serve as the Psychiatric Chaplain at the University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill, NC. I attended Campbell University where I earned a B.A. in Religion and Philosophy in 2002. I earned a Master of Divinity from Campbell University Divinity School. During and following my theological training, I served in parish ministry in Baptist, Episcopal, and United Methodist communities. I completed m,y Clinical Pastoral Education at Rex Hospital and UNC Hospitals. After serving as a chaplain in per diem capacity from 2015-2017, I joined the department of pastoral care in a full-time capacity as the Psychiatric Chaplain in October of 2017.
I am a proud member of the Association of Professional Chaplains, the North Carolina Chaplains' Association, and the Orange County Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. My work at UNC centers around proving spiritual care and emotional support to patients and families experiencing mental illness and offering supportive presence to the staff caring for them.
I understand spiritual care to be the work of journeying with patients, families, and staff in narrating their experience and seeking solace in the midst of life's difficulties and trials. I am passionate about integrating music, poetry, the arts, and meditation into the spiritual care I offer.
I live in Raleigh, NC, with my wife, Lydia, our four kids, a really clumsy dog, and a vindictive but occasionally sweet cat. My favorite things are books, strong coffee, Earl Grey tea, playing stringed instruments, tinkering with Linux (currently MX Linux and Fedora), rooting for the Chicago Cubs, and spending time outdoors with the people I love.
In addition to my work as a chaplain, I am also a musician. Currently I play guitar with Young Yonder. You can learn more about Young Yonder by clicking here. Looking for live or studio guitar work or want to book Young Yonder? You can hear a sample of our music by clicking here.I'm also available for public speaking, consulting, or just grabbing coffee. I love meeting new people and connecting around stuff that matters.
